Passkeys, MultiFactor Authentication, and more.

Quick recap

The meeting focused on planning upcoming events and addressing various club business matters. Jim announced his upcoming trip and discussed the need to handle Zoom and NameCheap renewals upon his return. The group reviewed future meeting topics, deciding to cover smart home technology in May and potentially the WWDC keynote in June. They discussed door prizes for the next meeting, including AirTags, Apple gift cards, and other items. The club mourned the passing of long-time member Jeff Jensen and discussed obtaining a photo and information for the newsletter. The conversation ended with updates on the current wildfire situation in the area, with several members living close to evacuation areas.

Technology and Meeting Planning Updates

The main business portion covered approval of February meeting minutes, financial updates from the treasurer, and plans for upcoming presentations. Mark agreed to present on password managers on May 11th, and the group discussed potential topics for the June 8th meeting, considering both smart home technology and augmented reality options.

WWDC Keynote Planning Discussion

The group discussed using the WWDC keynote presentation as their meeting content for June 8th. Mark suggested this would provide flexibility to explore other topics while having a structured agenda. Jim noted that by June, there might be information about Apple's roadmap for the new Siri with AI features, which is expected to be a major focus at WWDC. The group acknowledged that Mark Grumman's rumors about Apple's plans have been accurate in the past, though the source of his information remains unclear.

Venue Change Discussion Meeting

The group discussed a potential venue change for their meeting, with Jim reporting that Trinity Brewing has been taken over by 105 Brewery, which offers good pizza and decent beer. Mike and Mark mentioned a potential scheduling conflict in May, and Jim offered to run the SIG if needed. Mark confirmed in a chat message that 105 Brewery still serves pizza.

AirTag Owner Identification Discussion

The group discussed how to identify the owner of an AirTag found in someone's car. Jim and Mark explained that while AirTags typically show up in the "Find My" app when the battery is active, once the battery is dead, it's difficult to trace back to the original owner. Ralph suggested contacting Apple for assistance, and Guy mentioned that according to ChatGPT, only Apple or law enforcement can typically trace AirTags back to their owners.

Action Items Before Jim's Departure

The team discussed several action items before Jim's departure. Jim planned to handle credit card matters and download Sitely, while Skip needed to update the website for an upcoming meeting where Mark would present. Mark agreed to draft presentation materials and include information about Jeff Jensen, with Ralph offering to help find a photo. The team also briefly discussed Skip's new Wi-Fi 6E setup at home, which was functioning adequately despite some initial concerns about speed.

Door Prizes Planning Meeting

The team discussed door prizes for an upcoming event. Sharon confirmed she had a $10 gift certificate and a modem, while Mark reported ordering a 4-pack of AirTags for the club. The group discussed how to package the AirTags with keychain fobs, with Mark and Linnea offering to provide additional fobs. Linnea suggested purchasing additional Apple gift cards at a discount through Target, but Sharon noted she had already purchased monthly gift cards. The team confirmed the available prizes would include the gift certificate, AirTags, and the modem, with Mark volunteering to explain the modem's purpose.

Team Fobs and Jeff Memorial

The group discussed obtaining fobs for an upcoming presentation, with Linnea confirming she had two and Guy offering to provide two more. The team mourned the passing of long-time member Jeff, who died on the 19th, and discussed finding photos and information for the website and newsletter. Jim agreed to reach out to Laurel for photos of Jeff, while the team decided to wait before contacting Jeff's family for additional information. The conversation ended with updates on fire safety in the area, with several members living close to active fires.
