Bank Balance: $3547.36 in the bank and $11.23 in

PayPal account. This amount will go down by ~$100 due to payment for the domain name “smug.com”.

5. During the membership and Treasury report, Rich Voelker suggested that we are not getting enough new members into the club. Discussion ensued with the following suggestions:

· SMMUG needs to have a greater presence at Voelker Research (marketing & ownership)

o SMMUG cards/ads more prominent and permanent

· SMMUG subsidize purchases at Voelker Research for all SMMUG members (e.g. $10 off Macs bought at Voelker Research)

· Voelker Research subsidizing SMMUG Membership (e.g. 1% discount or $10 off membership)

· Providing SMMUG postcards to current members and if they bring in a new member, both the new and referring member gets a discount on membership

6. Old Business

Bob Binder will order 8 pizzas from Borriellio’s Bros. Pizza will be delivered at 6:45 PM. Plates, utensils, etc for about 50 members. Mark Griffith will order a cake for the party.

Action Item: Bob Binder will call Mark Pedri to see if he can supply cups, plates, sodas, utensils, etc.

Action Item: Mark Griffith to order a half sheet cake from Sam’s. Action complete.

7 October - LinkedIn Skip Mundy??

Action Item: Mark Griffith took an action to contact Skip Mundy to see if he is still willing to do a presentation on LinkedIn.

e. Meeting place for next year – Sr. Center or other venue? All

The Board discussed other venues (library, Senior Center, other places). The main requirements for a meeting place is centrally located, free WiFi, free parking, and the ability to schedule for a full 12 months at a time. The consensus was to stay with the Senior Center if the Center will remain open in 2011.

Action Item: Mark Griffith took an action to Mendy Putman, Director of the Colorado Springs Senior Center, to find out the state of the Senior Center. Subsequent to the meeting, we received a letter from the Senior Center and they will be open in 2011. The Senior Center will be charging $2 per head, per meeting. If we desire a flat rate, we can contact Mendy.

7. New Business

a. Look ahead to 2011 – Officers, Programs, etc. All

· Mike Baker suggested a program on Google including Google chat, Google apps, etc.

· Discussion regarding the Possible Future Programs (see below)

· The Board recommended going back to the membership with a clean sheet for 2011.

· Mike Marus suggested asking the membership what do you want to see and why

· The Goals and Focus areas below also need to be re-evaluated.

· Starting at the next meeting, ask the membership if they want to become Board Members.

8. Around the Table.

· Bob Binder suggested cutting the break and/or Q&A time in order to give the presenter of the main topic of the evening more time. Another suggestion was to request more time at the Senior Center. The consensus of the Board was to shorten Q&A and the break to the time it would take the presenter to set up.

· Another topic was for the person asking questions during the Q&A to use the microphone. The Board agreed that people are sometimes uncomfortable talking into a mic. Instead we can have the Q&A facilitator repeat the question.

Apps won't quit, PPC G5 won't shut down

I've upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 on my G5 PPC. Some of the apps will not quit. I tell them to quit, and they do, but the white dot on the Dock shows they are still open. They show in the Force Quit window, but Force Quitting them still leaves them open. In the Activity Monitor, they do not appear. But they still show as open on the Dock. And if you try and update one that is in this state, the updater says the app must be closed before the update can proceed. But the app will not close!

Also, the G5 will not shut down. And log out times out because an app is still open. I shut it down by holding in the power button till the screen goes dark. I've repaired the disk permissions, but this did not fix the problem.

How can I fix this? Do I need to go back to 10.4?

         Mike explored the cost of posting a weekly ad in the Independent. The cost was extremely
         high for a very small advertisement. Mike continues to post SMMUG cards throughout the
         community.

Get smmuged was presented to the group by Jim. A sample was handed out to the group
to place on their vehicles. Jim donated the magnets and graphic design. Thank you Jim!

The Board decided not to continue to pursue recruiting a Program Chairperson at this time since the Board has been handling the responsibilities of the Program Chairperson.

Jeff Jensen stated the SMMUG website redesign is progressing. See item e. below. One item of discussion was how long reviews and other data (e.g., a picture of Lynn Poos with Steve Wozniak) needed to stay on the main page of the SMMUG website.
Action: Joe Staten will ask Laurel Davenport if the reviews could be archived.

Rich Voelker told the Board Drupal version (V) 5 is loaded.

Action: Mike Baker will contact the Colorado Springs Independent to get the meeting announcement for Bob Smith’s presentation published.

g. Bylaw update status Mark Griffith/Joe Staten

The Corporate address must be a physical address (not a P.O. box) so the Board agreed it should be the Treasurer’s address.

There was extensive discussion on whether to add a new membership category, Honorary Life Member, to the SMMU Corporate Bylaws. A Honorary Life Member will not have to pay yearly dues, but would have the right to vote on SMMUG Corporate matters.
Action: Mark Griffith and Joe Staten will draft a description and this will be brought before the membership, as it is an amendment to the Bylaws.

6. New Business

a. Two photography clubs have been invited (Pikes Peak Camera Club – by Roger Appleton & Peak Digital Imaging Society – by Jim Brecht) to attend the Bob Smith show on 1 July.

b. Movie for About Us section on website. Jeff Jensen

Action: Need someone to take over making the movie, preferably a Flash video.
Jeff/Ralph will get it up on the website. Laurell Davenport has some good ideas on this and has a trial movie to start (in Quick Time format).

c. Buy a mini display port to VGA dongle like the one we needed at the last meeting. This will keep our projector collection up to date.

Status – purchased an in the projector bag.

d. Dying Projector – replacement options and dollars. Ralph Woodard

The Board discussed options for replacing or repairing the SMMUG projector. Options included:

Buying a new projector (XGA or HD?)

Determine if Toshiba has a trade-in or upgrade program

The Board decided to table this until more information can be gathered. Rich Voelker asked if someone could send him the make (Toshiba) model number so he could do some investigating.

Action: Jeff Jensen will send Rich Voelker the model # of the projector.

Video conversion software for input to iMovie?

I have some DVDs with home video I dubbed from old VHS tapes. The video is in VOB format which will not input into iMovie. I have found at least three programs that claim provide the conversion needed, but I don't know if one of these is better for the task at hand. The three I know about are Squared 5 Streamclip, DVDxDV, and iSkysoft DVD Ripper. Any opinions as to the best product (one of these or another perhaps) best for the task at hand?

Jeff Jensen answered a variety of questions with style, humor and great expertise. It was fun to look around the room and see all the ipads. It was hard to stay on task as scribe of the evening when one of our members sitting next to me was having such a good time with his new ipad. There is always something new to see and learn when you attend a SMMUG meeting.

Mark Pimentel, loyal SMMUG member mentioned that he is teaching an imovie class at the Fine ARTS Center. The information listed below was taken from the Fine Arts Center website.

Mark has lived in Colorado Springs three times. He graduated from the Air Force Academy with a BS in 1979. In the mid-90‘s he taught math at one of the first Charter Schools in the city. He moved back in 2000 as a math instructor for a local middle school. In 2004 Mark started his own business as an Apple Consultant and Trainer. This is his first year teaching at Bemis, concentrating on helping his students with the Digital Arts.

Who can use Fresh∙Ink? Anyone on the Web can read stories here. But, if you want to submit any content, you must register.

Who writes the stories? Members of our staff will write some stories and gather links to stories from different places, but mostly community members like you write the stories and take the photos.

Is there anything besides the Web site? Fresh∙Ink also is published in print, once a week, in selected neighborhoods.

How are stories selected to be in the newspaper section of Fresh∙Ink? The Fresh Ink staff reviews all of the postings every week and selects material that is topical and of interest to the neighborhood. Digital photo files should be 1MB uncompressed or 200 dpi at 8×10, and must include information about the date and place of the photo, and the names of each person whose face is pictured, from left to right (though there are exceptions: a picture of a marching band, for example, would not require the names of every band member in the picture). Writing should be concise; 250 words is a good limit, and in general, shorter items will get preference. We can’t double-check your work, so be sure to verify the spelling of names, and other facts. You are responsible for the accuracy of your submissions.

The 12:00 Noon Mac OS X SIG will be hosted by Mike Marus. This meeting focuses on Q&A on all things related to Mac OS X. Bring your questions and/or any tips and tricks you have found helpful in your use of Mac OS X.

Would still like to know if we could have a session, or more if necessary, on getting the gunk off of our computers. Maybe Mike could have a sig on getting rid of duplicates, old no longer needed files, software, etc.. I feel I need to clean up my computer because it has slowed down and knowing how to clean up the entire hard drive would put a little life back into my computer. I don't want to trash things that I need or want. Just need to know what is ok to dump and how best to find it.

This topic was discussed in depth.
Rich presented a slideshow to help the group focus on the important issues that need to be included in revamping the website. The following are some of the key elements that he presented to the group. The first thing he did was present a visual representation of our website. This was followed by a discussion of what a website should do:
A mouth piece for the group (24/7 salesperson)
Be informative (what’s going on)
Act as a new member funnel
Communications mechanism for members
Publicize benefits of membership

Rich presented some different Mac User Groups websites for comparison. All these sites had a consistent theme. They were clean, neat, simple, easy to navigate, and had four or five common topics. Some common elements seen in all the websites were about, join /renew, next meeting info, newsletter, and affiliations/credentials. Other interesting elements were user forums, consultants/help networks, pod/webcasts of meetings, social networking links.

The next step is to determine what we do and how we get it done.

b. First 45 minutes of the 4 March meeting – was discussed a length, and we decided to try 4 tables by subject. These will be discussion groups by topic. There will be 4 tables, each with a subject and facilitator. These are:

Bob Binder has sent the list of 5 prizes to LD for the newsletter, and the list will be included in Mark Griffiths email blast. Also, Bob has ordered the mug for Jon Parshall for his excellent presentation of Crossover Mac, and Bob has started the process of purchasing a commemorative gift box for Tom Harrington.

e. Switch web site to new tool &/or host Rich Voelker

This was tabled as Rich Voelker was out of town This will be discussed at the next Board meeting. However, we only received one volunteer for our proposed new-site team (we need 3 or 4) to switch to a new tool and/or a new website. So for now, Ralph and Jeff will work with Tom on approaches to update our version of Drupal from version 4 to version 6.

f. Business Cards? 3 X 5 Cards? Skip Mundy

Skip Mundy designed these, got them approved via email, and back from the printer and to the Board meeting, even though he was unable to attend. The 3 × 5 cards and generic business cards (no individual names) were taken by members to be used for publicity. Our publicity chair, Mike Baker took the remainder. Great job Skip Mundy and Jane Neff.

g. Publicity for the past month, future Mike Baker

Mike Baker has posted some 3 × 5 cards, and will focus this month on Libraries and downtown stores and coffee shops. Jeff Jensen has managed to get postings at the Senior Center and Pikes Peak Community College. Jeff Jensen is making the flyers and posters for the Board and members to distribute.

We will give out the stickers for members to put on their cars at the 4 March meeting. ** Joe Staten will bring the remaining stash of these.

6. New Business

a. Put program on smmug wiki for coordination Jeff Jensen

Mike Marus felt this was one too many of the places. So instead, in post meeting consideration, Jeff will post this as an editable comment to the minutes, which will be posted on our website under Forums > Club Business.

b. Membership Chair? Program Chair? Scribe? No volunteers for these. Mark Griffith suggested we could ask for member volunteers to be Program Chair, which traditionally has been a Board member. All agreed this was fine.

Goals for 2010

1. Increase memberships with emphasis on new members: a) new-to-Mac; b) new-to-computers; and 3) switchers

Moved and approved to make the goal 12 new members for 2010. This number does not include renewing members.

2. Have at least one “name brand” presenter by the end of the year.

Approved as a goal, must get moving on this. Our program list is pretty full already for this year, which is a good thing.

3. Create and maintain a Member Resource page; This has been accomplished. The bold items below are items that you must select or type to see the resource folder (iDisk). The > are sequential selections or steps. The resource is called “smmug-Public”. To get this to appear on your desktop, do the following:

- Go to: Finder > Go > iDisk > Other User’s Public Folder

- Then in the Member Name box that appears, type: smmug, and then click the Connect button

- After a short wait (depending on our Internet connection speed), the smmug-Public iDisk will appear on your desktop as a window

- When you are finished viewing or downloading items from smmug-Public, be sure and click on the eject symbol () in the navigation box on the left of the iDisk window. The smmug-Public iDisk will be put away (dismounted) and disappear (after a short wait).

Folders on the smmug-Public resource include “Meeting Presentation slides”, which contains Mark Pimentel’s slides for his Word Processing demo in January, and “Posters and Flyers”, which contains the posters and flyers for you to print and post at your favorite hangout or coffee shop. Always ask for permission to post before posting.

We’d like to make you aware of a unique opportunity for you to learn more about iPhoto ’09 in a hands-on classroom setting at the Bemis School of Art, being taught by current SMMUG member and past Director-At-Large, Mark Pimentel.
Mark will be teaching a three week class on Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings beginning this coming week on “iPhoto Orientation” and another three week class, “iPhoto: Advanced Techniques”, again on Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings beginning March 4th. Since it’s a hands-on seminar, students are expected to bring a laptop computer with the current version of iPhoto (version 8.1.1 from iLife ’09) to the class.

Latest security update causing some programs to quit. Is their a way to uninstall a security. Advice…Look for a fix, can’t uninstall.
Question about selecting a specific group of cells in numbers a spreadsheet program that is found in iworks.
Macronni Utility does things in the background. Runs utilities that might be scheduled to happen when your machine is not on so if you leave your machine on these operations will take place. Unix maintenance. This program is available for $7.00, local user Tom Harrington wrote the program.
Connectivity issued was discussed with one new user and he was given some good trouble shooting techniques. Recycle moden and restart your computer. He was also shown how to get to his network settings.
One user suggested that once a month you can leave your computer on. There was a small demonstration on how to schedule events on your computer specifically so maintenance operations can take place. Macronni is a good solution to the issue of making sure that your computer is getting all the necessary updates.

For those who would like to brush up on word processing techniques and applications on your Mac, this is the presentation! We’ll cover Macintosh options for word processing, like Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Apple Pages and TextEdit plus their various advantages and disadvantages. Then, using Apple Pages, we’ll describe common word processing concepts and techniques. Time permitting; these will include setting margins, tabs, paragraph formats and styles, different fonts and incorporating graphics into your documents. If you’ve forgotten (or never really learned) basic word processing skills this might be a great way to get on the right track.

With a word processor, what you see is what you get. Most word processing programs have common elements. Cut and paste moves text and pictures around. Automatic word wrap will fit your text nicely on your page. You can change the look of your document, font, style, graphics. You can merge files, create a table of contents. Page layout programs allow you to move your text and graphics around in a nonlinear way. Outliners can extract the key elements.

Pages is a powerful and easy to use program. The program has a bunch of themes that you see when you open the program.
Basics of word processing
Mark reviewed the different features found in the header and then he rolled into a presentation where he manipulated text, changed margins, copied styles, and demonstrated the value of using tabs. He showed the croup how to use the inspector and use tab stops. He showed the group how to put in tab leaders which they might use in a table of contents.

Gerry Simonson discussed the activities that will take place at the Saturday meeting.
The Special Interest Groups will meet Saturday, February 6, 2010 in the Training Room at Voelker Research, 5026 North Academy Blvd.
The Mac User SIG starts at 10:00 AM. The Saturday Mac Users SIG focuses on digital photography and video projects for Macs. Come join us, and bring your questions and your camera! Members are encouraged to bring camera photos and projects they are working on.
The 12:00 Noon Mac OS X SIG will be led by Mike Marus. The Mc OS X SIG focuses on all topics related to the Mac OS. Bring your questions and any tips and tricks you would like to pass along.

1 April – Following the board meeting there was a flurry of email and the board decided to OK Skip’s team to do Facebook since this was our original idea for the April meeting and ichat was proposed at the board meeting when we didn’t think we had a presenter. Thank you Skip for your persistence in making this program happen.

I finally received an email from a husband/wife team who are excited to present Facebook and social networking software at our April 1st meeting. They are really into this stuff and I think will do a great job, including the set up of a SMMUG Facebook page live as part of the demo. I told them to expect to present for 45 min. and allow 15 min. for questions.

Let me know if you want me to lock this down for April.
